AGING

by Duane Heiler

Not all things relating to aging are negative.

At 65 I was able to ride the metro at half fare.  Also, I was able to continue working and collect Social Security.  It gets better.  After my recent retirement (12/31/05) I found I was able to take advantage of cheaper weekday greens fees.  So, I'm playing more for less.  But the thing that takes the cake is that at Winter Park, Colorado, if you are 70+ (that's me) you can ski free.  So, recently, when Sandy and I went to Winter Park with Christina, Graeme and Katie,  I could not resist the temptation to get back on the slopes after over 5 years and a hip replacement.  All I can say is eat your heart out.

In addition,  I recently heard through the grape-vine,  that certain members of the Kane houshold consider skiing much too risky and prefer to go to Florida to play golf.  But, I understand it rains there once in awhile.

"The Kanes may be getting braver. Also, it must be easier now than the days we had to pile 6 kids and 10 pairs of ski gear in our station wagons. Remember the time you and Sandy had to drive 5 of the kids all the way to Maine and we had just 1 (Bethie) because she had a temperature of 104?"

"Ha! Nice one :) As my dad always says, "If you're not living on the edge . . . you're taking up too much room.""

"That free pass @ 70 sounds great. However, I am still such a youngster, I think that global warming will have wiped out most ski slopes by that time. Golf will still be with us, thank God!"

"This reminds me of another brave Uncle Dewey moment: you letting me stand on the front of your skis as you skied us both safely down that fearful Bear Mt. run in Killington. Thanks for the story!"

"Duane, Congratulations on your retirement! Am glad you are enjoying yourself. Not all Kane's are too chicken to ski in their later years. Some of us still do, but tend to choose the intermediate slopes, and prefer not to ski unless the temperature is above zero!"
