Daddy and the Cows

by Jill Crawford

My father, Bud, was a farmer.  He and mama had about 75 head of cattle and he cared for those cattle.  All of them.  He and mama lived out in the country, with only a few close neighbors.  One night, during the summer months, mom and dad woke up about 3:00 in the morning.  They both could hear the cattle "balling" (mooing).  Dad said he had better get up and go check on the cows.  He was worried about cattle rustlers or coyotes I suppose.

He sat up in bed and mama said "Bud, you better put something on before you go out there."  Dad must have mumbled and said okay and went on about his business.  The story according to mama was that she turned over in the bed just in time to see dad walking out of the bedroom door in a PAIR OF SHOES.

You see, Dad slept in the NUDE and those shoes were the "something" that he put on.

I miss mom and dad.  Both are in heaven now.  Dad tending the cattle and mama laughing.
