My Success Story

by Terry Remedies

In 2000 my husband suffered a heart attack that rendered him unable to continue working. We had six children at home ,with one of them currently enrolled the Head Start Program. When I applied for public assistance I had to participate in a work program to receive help. Since the school was only one block from my home, I was allowed to volunteer in the Head Start classrooms. When an opening became available for an assistant teacher I met the criteria to apply for this position. I got that job and have since moved into a lead teacher position. At the time of employment I only had a high school diploma but have since acquired an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Educfation and am currently working on my bachelor's degree.

During my time in the classroom I have witnessed the benefits this program  provides for the children and the parents. Education administrators are always calling upon parental involvement to improve the quality of parent/teacher relations. Our Head Start program allows parents to be involved in all aspects of ther program including policy making, curriculum, and staff. This in turn helps build self-esteem in parents who need to feel important to their children and the community.

I am proud to be a Head Start parent , a Head Start teacher, and a Head Start supporter.

"In 1974 I became a head start student and at the time my mother was a young factory worker who always wanted something better for me. She wanted me to have better opportunities in life than she did. With the help of my teachers, bus driver and other staff working with head start I grew to appreciate learning and those who cared for the well being of the future generations. I went on to public school and was able to achieve a great deal academically. I took college prep courses to prepare me for college. In 1994 I graduated with a degree in Business Administration from Jackson State University. By having that head start it gave me the ability to want something better in life and go after it. I currently work for the Head Start program in Columbia, MS under the direction of Mr. John Hales. I have worked my way up in the organization from a receptionist to accounts payable/transportation clerk. I will continue to show dedication and support to head start and the communities that it enhances. My two children are also products of head start and continue to show the learning skills they have achieved. I am glad to be a product of head start where I learned commitment, love, respect and overall that I am someone special. Natissa Nelson Thompson Pearl River Valley Opportunity, Inc. Head Start Dept.
