The family was trying to date the photo that goes with this story. It was taken Easter 1985. Months earlier I decided to surprise Michael with a homemade Halloween costume. It cost a fortune for the materials and took forever to sew since I had never taken sewing lessons. When it was almost finished, I told Michael I had a big surprise.
I held the costume up with a flourish and said, "You're going as ET for Halloween!" Michael took one look at the costume and began to howl. "I want a real costume," he said. "This is a real costume," I insisted. "No, it's not. I want one like the other kids have. Real ones come from the drug store."
So, on Halloween 1984, Tom went as ET, Bethie went as a Christmas tree, and Michael was dressed from head to foot in a plastic Batman costume from People's Drug Store. In April, when we wanted to take a picture of the three children in their Easter outfits, guess who showed up for the photo.
