The real truth of the matter is that it’s easy to forget how it was to be a child, and to do child-like things: learning to tie shoes, for example. These days, with Velcro on just about everything, some children never do learn to tie their shoes. I know some 12-year-olds who still can’t, even though they have normal fine motor skills.

What this little girl learned (and it’s one of the things we’re so glad to be able to teach at Head Start) is that if you just keep trying, there’s really not much you can’t do. These days, that’s a good lesson, and one whose worth could not be more evocatively expressed  than in this little girl’s  broad grin: an accomplishment diligently worked for, and (as here documented) finally achieved.

"My grandpa taught me how to tie my shoes when I had despaired of ever learning, and Mrs. Mullen, my 3rd grade teacher, patiently taught me how to tell time even though I was supposed to have learned in 2nd grade. I watched in fascination as my dad taught my little brother how to tie a necktie. Perseverance and love make all the difference. Thank goodness for everyone who loves kids. Sequatchie Valley, thanks."
