Burning Man 2006 (9): At the End

by Michael Kane

Here's one of my favorite clips from Burning Man.  This sight made me laugh again and again . .

I learned something deep while I was there.  One night I was in my cold sleeping bag and I didn't want to go out.  I was tired and I felt antisocial.  I was outside of my comfort zone, that's for sure.  I saw the stars through the mesh top of my tent and I thought, "You know, I bet camping like this -- in a more typical environment -- would be nice."

The funny thing is, I had said for years that I hated camping.  That I doubted I'd ever do it again.

And I realized something: by leaving your comfort zone, you expand your comfort zone, and then you have more room inside of it.  In this case, the difficult camping at Burning Man made regular old camping something I'd consider doing again.  Maybe, by leaving your comfort zone, you claim more of the world as your own.

Someone said to me, "You may not get what you want, but you'll get what you need."  That's exactly what happened for me.

I didn't forget about Fernanda.  But I learned and I grew.  And I can't wait to do it again next year.

I owe thanks to Joshua Suzanne, Mike, Scott, Heather, Kathy and Meredith.

Meredith and Joshua Suzanne cracking up

Z, Matt, Dan, Andy, Bill, Sean Patrick, Russell and Nemo.

My clients for helping me to go, and lots of others who were kind and helpful along the way.  Maybe next year I can be to someone else what these people were to me this year.

UPDATE: BIG thanks to Andrew for answering my support emails while I was gone!! sorry for forgetting!

Thanks to all of you.  And if you haven't been, go experience it for yourself!

This is a multi-part story.

"The song says, "Love the one you're with.""

"if you can't be with the one you love..."

by James Brouillard

""I'm glad James added the rest of the line for those who don't know it. I've always thought it was one of the truest and best lines ever written (but I'm pretty old -- having been one of the first to don a mini skirt--1967). By the way, Dad loved the skirt! T That line always reminds me of Dad singing that Stones favorite, "You Can't Always Get What You Want" to your sister when she's whining about how unfair life is.""

"It's one of my favorite lines, too. Not only does it make a lot of sense in terms of personal relationships, but in terms of just accepting and enjoying the present moment. Definitely a wise idea."
