In high school, there was a girl in my neighborhood, Anie, who I used to hang with. In junior high (Carl Sandburg Middle School), we used to pick on her. I think it was 'cause she was cute and nobody knew her too well. She had just switched to our school in 8th grade, but I knew her before then because we both went to "Junior Assembly" in 7th grade. (It was basically training for cotillion - I guess VA is southern, or wants to be).
In fact, I remember hearing through the grapevine that she had a crush on me. I called her up that night . . . the conversation went roughly like this:
- Me: "Hey, Anie . . . um . . . I heard you have a crush on me?"
- Anie: " . . . . . . . . . . . . oh my god . . . . . . . . "
- Me: "Anie?"
- Anie: [silence]
- Me: "Ummmmmm . . . . "
- Anie: " . . . . . . . . this is so embarrassing. I have to go."
In 2nd grade, my best friend was David Baker. In fact, I remember the day 2nd grade ended. It was past bedtime and I lay in bed, crying 'cause I knew I would miss David so much.
Anie just emailed me . . . she said, "We lost touch so many moons ago!"
She's raising two beautiful cats (and a dog), lives in Kingstown, and is getting married in June. This is the lovely couple:
