Burning Man 2006 (6): Meredith

by Michael Kane

I grew up with a poster that said, "What is a friend? One with whom you dare to be yourself."

Shortly after Joshua, Mike and Scott staked out a campground, three others arrived looking for a place to stay. Joshua suggested they camp together.

Meredith and Heather are sisters; Kathy's their mom. They grew up in Chelsea, though Meredith now lives in Portland. Everyone was surprised that they had never visited Joshua's store, Rags-A-Gogo.

Heather, Meredith and Kathy

We all hit it off. Heather made me laugh and I made Meredith laugh. I had a special connection with Meredith.

She has a sweet voice and a kind heart. We would spend time together and I felt very accepted. It's such a relief to be in such company, especially when you're struggling to accept yourself.

It's hard to explain what she meant to me -- she helped me to see myself.

Thank you, Meredith . . you made my Burning Man.

This is a multi-part story.
