He Needs a Push

by Stuart Kabakoff

We've all seen someone broken down, in need of a push. It happens to everyone, you run out of gas or your car suddenly stops and, unless you can coast into a parking lot you're screwed. Once I ran out of gas while I was at a stoplight in the middle lane of a busy road, my car almost got hit more than once (I got the hell out). At the time I thought that one was bad, but yesterday I was walking back to work after getting lunch and I saw someone that needed a push more than anyone; his car was diagonal, blocking both lanes of traffic going the opposite direction on a busy road. I gave him a push.

"Alright Stu!"

"Ha! I like it - I once helped someone jump start their car. Someone stopped and said it was a nice thing to do. I said, "Well, what goes around comes around." He nodded and said, "Yeap . . you gotta be good.""

"Hi Stu, sometimes giving someone a push is a lifesaver. My car had a flat tire on my first day as a trainee to be a 3rd grade teacher in Prince Georges County, Maryland. Nobody expected me to return home until 6 p.m., but the session let out early and my car had a flat tire on the Washington Beltway (I-495) around 3:30. Two very scary looking young men stopped and tried to get me into their pickup truck. They said, get in and we'll take you to a gas station. I asked them to just call one when they got off the road. "No" they said, "Get in the middle there and we'll take you there." I was so scared I cannot begin to explain it. Even writing it down now brings back the same old terror. For whatever reason, they gave up on me and drove off. I was unbelievably grateful when an elderly African American man drove up in a truck full of old tires. He opened my trunk, located my spare, put it on for me, and told me to drive carefully. Now, that's what I call a "push." A few years later a neighbor of mine named Stephanie Ann Roper was not so lucky. Thanks for being a good Samaritan."

"The best push I ever got was when my sister and I were driving the Alcan highway in her 1990 subaru legacy. We were on our way from Fairbanks, AK to Albuquerque, NM when we got a flat tire in the middle of nowhere in Canada. We were both in our early 20s and had no idea how to change a tire, but knew we had better get started. We barely started unpacking the trunk to even reach the spare tire, when a tour bus loaded with white haired toursits pulled over on the side of the road and stopped. The driver was a middle aged guy with thinning hair and a belly hanging over his pants and he came over and offered his help. He proceeded to change our flat tire with multiple elderly men looking over his shoulder, jingling their pocket change and offering advice. Thank goodness he stopped because the lug nuts were on so tight, he had to go get the breaker bar from the bus to get them off. Lisa and I never could've done this ourselves. He was our savior and I have never forgotten his kindness. I think the tourists were pretty impressed, and hopefully he got some good tips from them that day!:)"
