Measures of Success

by Sequatchie Valley Head Start

Success comes in many forms, and at Head Start we often find the best successes – the ones that mean the most – are the small ones that come every day. Measures of that success must, therefore, be small, and frequent, but we accommodate that with many quick measurements, taken often: stacking blocks, for example.

Most children can line blocks up beside each other, or stack them atop each other, but can they see how to place them in more complex patterns? Bry’Ana can, and no one could be more pleased with her accomplishment that she, herself. And, for others, what could be a better expression of the pleasure of her achievement than her own, broad grin, recorded here for anyone who cares to share in her delight?

"Bry’Ana is another shining example of how well Head Start, the premier early childhood program, works. Today, she is building blocks...no doubt, tomorrow she will be building cities. Just remember you heard it first, at "Head Start"!"

"Clearly, Bry'Ana knows that she's done something far beyond lining the blocks up or stacking them. Looks like a budding engineer to me!"
