Jasper Theodore Kane listed his profession as clerk in a custom house on the 1880 Federal Census. He and his wife, Eliza Hassett, lived in Brooklyn, NY, in the Hassett household. Their little boy,
Jasper Thomas, was 3, and Mary E., was 5. They were motherless just two years later. Eliza, who was born in Ireland on October 31, 1849, died at 33 on October 26, 1882. Jasper Theodore, now a widower, married Emiline Fitch on April 23, 1884. Less than four years after their marriage, Jasper Theodore died, leavinghis young children in Emiline's care. She was greatly loved by thefamily and especially young Jasper Thomas. He would later become thefather of eight children who called her Aunt Emiline. She helped Jasperand his wife, Lauretta, raise the next generation of Kanes as if theywere her own. Not surprisingly, there was another Jasper to come in the Kane family. Jasper Thomas's first-born, Jasper Hugh, became exceptionally famous. You can read his Portrait here:
Jasper HughKane. It's hard to imagine spending a romantic honeymoon with General Sherman nearby, but I'm sure they were treated very well. Just a glimpse of the sumptuous wedding banquet General Sherman presented to his daughter Maria Ewing Sherman and her groom, Thomas William Fitch, proves the General's fine tastes. Of particular interest is the intertwined "F" and "S" tree and foliage imprimatur.
